Kerala is the southernmost state of India, and a place like nowhere I've ever been. From the misty mountain tea plantations to the canals along the tropical coast, it's a place I'd happily visit again and again.

  • Kerala is known for it's system of canals, or the "backwaters."
  • Misspellings (and new gender assignment) aside, I could get used to being welcomed by a driver whenever I step off an airplane...
  • Another car, another dashboard Ganesha.
  • It was a very long and winding drive to our first stop, Munnar.
  • Mist, mountains and monkeys...
  • Known for tea production, there are tea plantations throughout this mountainous region.

  • In Kerala, Catholicism was the predominant religion, with Jesus (and a varied cast of saints) replacing Vishnu and Ganesha.
  • There were several raging waterfalls along our journey to the resort.

  • Along the way to Munnar, we stopped at a spice plantation. We had a guided tour, led by a man who told us, "You from America? We miss Obama..."

  • I wish I could remember what these were--maybe coffee beans? Peppercorns? I need to learn to write stuff down as I photograph...
  • This was a cocoa pod, ripening on the tree.
